COMMENTSIn the second draft this extract is almost double the length of its equivalent in the first. The phrase pencilled into the first draft in brackets has been deleted.
Both the film scenario and the libretto simplify Father Grigoris' exhortations to Konstandis-James, which are rendered only selectively. For example, the admonition to "Put less barley in the coffee" in the final draft becomes "Don't mix barley in the coffee" in the libretto and "Don't water down the coffee" in the scenario
Konstandis' reflection on "Don't beat your wife" ("He was on the point of saying 'It isn't me who beats my wife, it's she beats me,'") was added to the second draft. It is incorporated into the dialogue in the libretto, but does not appear in the film scenario
