CORRESPONDENCE WITH RAHEL
" - "Are you crying?" I asked, leaning close to her
- No matter where you touch a Jew," she answered, "you find a wound.""Report to Grece, p.346 (Translated by P. Bien, Bantam Books 1966)
Kazantzakis met the poetess Rahel Lipstei-Minc n in the autumn of 1922, in the revolutionary atmosphere of Berlin (see also Letters to Galatea)
. At that time, Rahel was a member of a cell group of Marxist-Leninist women. The author was later to dedicate his collected travel articles entitled "Russia" to her.
In those of Kazantzakis' notes held in the Archive of the Historical Museum of Crete, the author recalls the anniversary of their acquaintance.
A number of Rahel's postcards were written four years after the death of Kazantzakis. The date on others (1922) probably refers to the year of their acquaintance rather than to that in which they were written. This is certainly true of the colour cards by F. Marc. On all of the cards Lipstein signs herself as Rala Lipstein-Minc or simply Rala. In Book 11 of Kazantzakis' Odyssey
, a young Jewess called Rala
, leads a revolution against the decadent regime of Thebes in Egypt. On the other hand, Rahel's name does not appear in "Report to Greco ".
