LETTERS TO GALATEA
On fascism
[...]
I can't wait to see where Italy is now, what the intellectual currents are, what worries there are, what efforts are being made in art and thought. One thing is dicernible to all - the domination of fascism. And fascism is a major social current - not merely a political one - which is carrying the youth of all Italy away. Just as bolshevism is a policial, social, economic, intellectual etc. slogan, Fascism is likewise. Young people from 15 years upwards wander the streets in their black shirts, black caps, on permanent mobilisation. A whole host of art periodicals of fascist ideology are being published. Perhaps to study this would give me the key to contemporary intellectual Italy. Bolshevism and Fascism are the two poles around which Europe revolves. Mussolini is perhaps much greater than we had become used to believing up to the present. In any case, I will be able to ascertain this later on; what I'm writing to you now is just my first impression.
