LETTERS TO HIS FATHER AND SISTERS
Impressions of life in Paris (II)

Dear Mother and Anestasia and Eleni,
I'm beginning to worry. I've sent you hundreds of letters and still haven't received anything. But I'm expecting one any day now. I'll bore myself telling you that my one joy here is receiving your letters. Write a lot to me Anastasia - and you, Eleni. There's no silly Androcles here to make fun of you. I want you to write to me as if you were chatting to me, as if I was with you. [...] How you are, who's getting married, who's dying, who comes to visit you, how father is, how mother is - I want all of it.
I myself am beginning to get used to things here. I am beginning to find their food tasty. Fruit, if only I had fruit! (Mother's sure to say "Oh my poor child!" at this point). You can't know how much I miss Archanes grapes! If I had a basketful I'd eat all of it. Grapes here cost one and a half drachmas an oka(1) - and what grapes at that! Watery and disgusting. Pears cost 20 lepta(2) each, figs ten lepta, cucumbers one drachma. You can't imagine how expensive fruit is. Only bananas are plentiful and cheap. 10 or 15 lepta each. All the women here sell things. If only you could see them! They wear clogs and shout like mullahs . Guess what I have for lunch? Well, here it is: Soup, a meat course, a fish course, cheese, dessert and a bottle of wine. All of this for one and a half drachmas.
Wine is de rigeur here. When I told the waiter the first time that I didn't drink wine, he looked at me twice and said "Sir must be joking". On account of the cold here everyone, men and women, have a bottle at table. In any case, whether you drink or not or only eat half the food, you still pay one and a half drachmas.
I've still got enough money. I met a University professor who has got to like me and will help me, so I don't have money worries any more. How are you? I see you every night in my dreams. I never tire of writing to you every day - write to me too because I love you, my dearest mother and Anestasia and EleniNίκος
